Understanding how the most popular models have been found is always interesting, and these top plus-size models are no exception. Through online model recruitment sites to modeling conferences, this is how you found some of your favorite plus-size models.
1. Robyn Lawley
Robyn had a hard time finding work as a plus-size model in Australia as a teenager. After casting a call, she went to casting but was sent home every time because she didn’t fit in the small sample clothes.
Even after trying out every diet in the book, her body simply couldn’t get the look that traditional modeling demanded. It wasn’t until she gave up counting calories that she actually started her career. She met an agent, Bella Model Management’s Chelsea Bonner, who gave her a fresh modeling outlook saying she’s perfect just the way she’s. Following her rejection, Robyn moved to New York and worked through rejection before she landed the Italian Vogue and French Elle covers.
2. Sophie Dahl
The story of Sophie Dahl is somewhat of a modeling agency myth. She was discovered by acclaimed Vogue stylist Isabella Blow when, after a fight with her mother, Blow found her sobbing on the street. Blow introduced her to Sarah Doukas, a top model scout and Storm Models owner. It was not long until Sophie appeared in German Vogue (photographed by Karl Lagerfeld), Italian Vogue, Visionaire, and Vanity Fair, that Sarah signed her immediately.
3. Marquita Pring
It had always been said that Marquita had a lovely face, so she decided around the age of 15 to try modeling. She took part in a casting call and met dozens of institutions in Canada. Most told her it was necessary for her to lose weight. Nevertheless, some people liked her look and asked her to take a test-photo shoot to ensure that the camera was comfortable. She was and they signed her on site when she took her pictures to a small Canadian agency.
Tara Lynn, who grew up as 14/16, was always mindful of her weight. She did not arrive to embrace her body until school. Instead she gathered the nerve to contact a modeler in Seattle and they signed on the spot one day, bursting with confidence. She’s been shown on Glamour magazine cover and H&M models.
5. Tess Holliday
At the age of fifteen the industry started with the attempt at Tess Holliday, also known as Tess Munster. After she was told to be “too short and too large as a model, she set aside her aspirations and formed a family.
She moved to Los Angeles at the age of 24 and posted some images to the web. An agent noticed her blog, liked her look and, shortly afterwards, the Arts and Entertainment network asked her to present “Strong” as the face of her hit show; Tess appeared in domestic advertises and advertisements and she began her modeling career. Tess is named by Vogue Italia to be one of the largest models in the world, and it has become Vogue Italia’s largest model, Milk Model Management, a major modeling agency.
6. Ashley Graham
When she was discovered at a model and talent convention, this plus-sized superstar was only 12 years old. Her first modeling contract with a local agency was signed, and three years later she made a major leap on to Ford Models. From editorials, runway modeling, to TV commercials and movies, Ashley has done everything. In 2016, she was the first plus-size model to rock a bikini onto the cover of Sports Illustrated Swimsuit Edition, which was what really put the national focus on Ashley.
